Men's Haricare

Should all men use conditioner?
Not all men need to use conditioner, but a lot should. If your hair is medium-length (3-4 inches) or longer, or if it’s dry or coarse, conditioning is essential. If you have short hair or fine hair, not so much. In that case, you can get away with just using Detangling Toning Mist after you shampoo. It counteracts the harsh pH of tap water to make your hair look smoother and feel more manageable without weighing it down.

What are three routine “musts” every man should do daily?
  1. Shampoo.
  2. Massage your scalp with your fingertips to support blood flow to the area and relieve stress. Strong hair starts at the root.
  3. Detangling Toning Mist, which adjusts the pH of the water that’s left on your hair after you shower. It’s a little thing and as light as water, but makes such a difference to the way your hair looks and feels.

Which PHILIP B. products do you recommend for men?
I always recommend my Nordic Wood Hair + Body Shampoo (made with forest-fresh botanicals), my Peppermint Avocado Shampoo (which makes your scalp feel cool and tingly-clean) and my Santa Fe Hair + Body Shampoo (amazing for oily hair and skin). Each exquisite formula is unisex, great at gently clarifying, and leaves you feeling pampered and refreshed. For guys with long hair, I also recommend my Everyday Beautiful and Forever Shine shampoos and conditioners. They’re made with time-released safflower oleosomes to keep your hair in great condition.

How is men's hair care different than women's hair care?
Men tend to be wash-and-go people. They like something easy and fast. But they appreciate special, luxurious products, too.

What steps can men take to combat early hair loss/thinning?
Healthy-looking hair comes from a healthier-feeling scalp, so be sure to nurture both. Gently massage your scalp in small circular motions every day. And to support fuller-looking hair, my Scalp Booster System is a game-changer. It’s clinically proven to improve the look of density, coverage and fullness, so you'll see less shedding in your hairbrush.

Are there any myths about men's haircare that you want to debunk?
Don’t buy into the idea that a cleansing conditioner works as well as a separate shampoo and conditioner. I get that men like an all-in-one product, but you’re not doing yourself any favors there. Shampoos and conditioners have distinct functions, and you lose some of their benefits when you combine them. Also, cleansing conditioners tend to make hair look dull.

Any comments on beard care?
Do a deep cleanse with my Peppermint Avocado Shampoo and follow with a light conditioner (like my Lightweight Deep Conditioner) while you’re in the shower. Once you’re out, use my Rejuvenating Oil as a beard oil; it’s great for keeping your beard looking nice and shiny. Then mist on a little Detangling Toning Mist and you’ll have the happiest beard in the land. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
